U-M Introduces Paid Maternity and Parental Leave

Michigan Medicine now offers an expanded maternity and parental leave policy, effective September 1, 2018. The maternity leave benefit provides a maximum of six weeks paid leave for childbirth recovery and is available at the time of hire. The parental leave benefit provides eligible parents, including fathers, an additional six weeks of paid leave to bond with a child. Faculty and staff must have completed six months of service, and the parental leave benefit must be taken within one year of a child’s birth or placement from adoption, foster care or legal guardianship. Eligible birth mothers also have the option of using both maternity and parental leave benefits for a total of 12 weeks paid leave. A special eligibility period is available for new parents, who added a child to their families between July 1 and August 31, 2018 – before the policy was in place.
