U-M Health Timekeepers & Approvers Weekly Update: Thursday, May 19, 2022

M-Pathways-Fluid Time Reporting Fixes (Enter Time Page)

Fixes for the following issues on the Enter Time page will be installed to M-Pathways on May 18:

For monthly employees, time entry fields for the last week of the month will be aligned properly with labels.

On Enter Time, the page will better fit to the screen so it’s not always necessary to scroll right to click +/- to add/remove a row. On smaller screens, it may be necessary to zoom out (CTL + -) to fit +/- on the screen.

Payroll Team 360 Feedback

The Payroll Team would appreciate having your feedback on the team’s performance as a whole. How well are you being serviced by the UM Health Payroll Team overall? To collect feedback we’ve created the Qualtrics survey below. It is very short and should take you just 5 minutes or less to fill out.

If you have feedback about specific individuals you can send that directly to them via email or to the Payroll Team Manager, Amanda Louks (alouks@med.umich.edu).

Thank you in advance!

Shift Premium Case Study

This scenario is for a non-bargained for employee. The scheduled work shift starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. with a 30 minute unpaid lunch included somewhere between 11 a.m. & 7 p.m. equating to 7.5 hours worked. Is this shift eligible for the Afternoon Shift Premium (excluding weekends)?

Answer: Yes. The Shift Premium SPG language says we add an hour to the shift premium start time (in this case 11 a.m.), for every hour the shift is less than 8 for part-time shifts (less than 8 hours). Since this shift is not a full hour less than 8 we keep the 11 a.m. start time making this shift eligible for the Afternoon Shift Premium (ESA).

Determining when shift premium is payable can be tricky. Shift Premium pay is one of the most, (if not THE most) nuanced pay policies to interpret and apply to the multitude of scenarios that occur at UM Health.

What other case scenarios do you have questions about in regards to eligibility for shift premium pay? Send your scenarios to alouks@med.umich.edu and we might include it in one of our weekly updates for everyone to learn from.

Note: Policy and contract language are usually not specific in how the rules get applied or what the standard practices are for applying them at U-M Health. For this reason, it’s  important to ensure you are following the standard practices so that our pay policies are applied to all staff consistently.
