New – Floating Holiday Effective January 1, 2025
Effective Jan. 1, 2025, benefits-eligible regular non-bargained-for staff have access to an additional paid Floating Holiday each year. Staff covered by a collective bargaining agreement should consult their contract regarding eligibility for the new holiday.
A new time reporting code will be available to report the Floating Holiday, HFT (Holiday Float). Additionally, a new Leave Plan Bank will be added for each eligible employee that includes the Floating Holiday hours available. Each employee will have 8 hours times FTE (appointment fraction) added to the bank on the first of each year going forward.
Things to remember about Floating Holiday use:
- Must be used all at once on one day (incremental use is not allowed).
- Must be pre-scheduled and approved by the supervisor (much like a PTO day).
- Floating Holiday is prorated so no pay or PTO may need to be added to supplement when used.
- Unused Floating Holidays do not carry over into subsequent years (use it or lose it).
- Cannot be used for a last day worked when going on LOA or Terminating from the University.
- Cannot be used to bridge to extended sick or extend a medical leave of absence.
- Cannot be used on a UM designated Holiday.
- Floating Holiday is not included in the calculation towards Overtime for any staff.
- If called into work on a scheduled Floating Holiday, the day turns into a regular work day and the Floating Holiday must be rescheduled.
Please review updates made to the U-M Health Holiday Policy IV., E. on Policy Stat that describe the Floating Holiday rules and regulations.
