MNA/UMPNC Update: May 20, 2022 - Details on current proposal included

After two weeks of 5-day negotiations, representatives from Michigan Medicine and MNA/UMPNC made progress in a few key areas. While we had hoped to have a tentative agreement by today, we will continue to meet with MNA/UMPNC over the coming weeks in commitment to reaching an agreement.

Our nursing leaders have been receiving questions this week, so we would like to provide information about what is included in our most recent package proposal. Michigan Medicine’s proposal includes the following:

  • Across the board pay increases of 5% for FY23, 4% for FY24, 4% for FY25, and 3% for FY26 (for framework and RSAM nurses, increases are based off of framework level C)
    • In addition to a $1,000 lump sum, which would be paid in FY23
  • Continued work on a new salary-setting model for NPs
  • Increases to shift and weekend differentials beginning in FY24
  • An expanded on-call system that will enable nurses to select a 4-hour block during which they are on-call
    • The proposal includes an increase to hourly rates if nurses are called into work as a result of being on-call
    • The goal of expanding an on-call system is to reduce the need for mandatory OT as gaps in shifts can be covered by on-call nurses
    • The proposal enables nurses to select the shifts they are available to be on-call, enabling them to better accommodate their own schedule, supporting overall work/life balance
  • No changes to mandatory overtime, meaning the process outlined in the current contract will not change
    • Nurses will continue to be paid an overtime premium of 1.75 times their hourly rate
    • The 4-hour individual limit will still apply

We also want to clarify information that has been circulating about the Central Staffing Resources unit. Michigan Medicine recognizes the importance of nurses who work in CSR and the much-needed support they provide to nursing units throughout the hospitals. We have not proposed making any changes to CSR.

Lastly, we spent time this week continuing to explore ways that Michigan Medicine can ensure we have staff available to meet patient care needs, while also enabling our nurses to have a work/life balance. We will continue meeting with representatives from MNA/UMPNC five days next week as we work to reach an agreement for our nurses.
