MNA/UMPNC Update: June 20, 2022

In a continued commitment to reaching a tentative agreement by June 30, Michigan Medicine passed another package of updated proposals to MNA/UMPNC for consideration. This package included proposals on staffing and scheduling, overtime, and paid time off. Michigan Medicine also provided an updated proposal on items for NPs and APRNs.

Michigan Medicine also introduced a counterproposal relative to staffing incentives and an on-call system to apply if units meet specified functional vacancy deficits. The goal of this proposal, in conjunction with a new attendance article, is intended to support staffing on units and reduce the need for mandatory overtime. Unscheduled PTO can pose additional challenges to staffing and while CSR nurses are a great resource to cover last-minute needs, Michigan Medicine wants to ensure nurses are not overburdened by unscheduled absences.  Additionally, Michigan Medicine proposed additional protections relative to mandatory overtime where instances of mandatory overtime that is prescheduled but subsequently cancelled are counted as mandatory overtime occurrences.

With less than two weeks left until the current agreement between Michigan Medicine and MNA/UMPNC expires, we are hopeful that we can make progress next week toward reaching an agreement.
