Update on HOA Contract Negotiations, 3/21/2023
The Michigan Medicine Labor Relations team is committed to collaborating with our HOA colleagues to ensure a competitive compensation and benefits package, and to find meaningful solutions to their workplace concerns. House Officers play a vital role in our care teams across our hospitals and clinics. It is our goal to find ways to help them feel more appreciated and supported. The training our House Officers receive from Michigan Medicine’s world-class faculty is invaluable, and positions them to enter their chosen field on a path for career development and success.
We recognize that our House Officers have a tremendous amount of responsibility and are devoted to their work. Since our bargaining began on February 7, 2023, we have traded over three dozen proposals and had numerous constructive discussions across the bargaining table about issues of concern to both House Officers and the University. To date, progress has been demonstrated by both sides tentatively agreeing to several proposed changes.
The nature of bargaining is not easy and is a detailed process. To ensure that we are addressing all issues presented, the bargaining team has started by addressing issues that impact the daily lives of the House Officers, followed by economic discussion. Out of respect for the HOA bargaining team’s interest in receiving the University’s counter proposals on economic items, a counter was provided on Tuesday, March 21, 2023. The art of negotiations is an exchange of ideas, and generally a proposal is not final until the conclusion of bargaining.
The University’s Bargaining Team looks forward to continued talks, and concluding these negotiations with a Successor Agreement that meets the needs of both the House Officers and those who support them prior to the expiration on June 30, 2023.
Labor Relations will continue to update the University community on the status of these negotiations each week as needed.
