First Week within the Department

You employee’s first week may be overwhelming. To better acclimate your employee in their new environment, it is important to explain how the unit/department functions, establish and show how communication channels work. In order to ensure this please consider the following.

  • New employee is expected and acknowledged upon arrival
    • Upon arrival, ensure that your new employee is greeted and welcomed
    • If you are not personally available to welcome, assign and coach a designee
  • Unit/department tour - on the new employee's first day, provide them a tour of your department including:
    • Restrooms
    • Lunch room
    • Work space
    • Manager/Supervisor location
    • Where to keep personal items (lockers)
  • Provide your new employee with a calendar of orientation activities including
    • Regular touch points with supervisors (daily, weekly, monthly as needed)
    • Meetings with any key department contacts
  • Introduction to other staff members
  • Review with the new employee who their primary points of contact
  • Building/Medical Campus Tour - within the new employee's first week, provide them a tour of your building and any other off site locations in which meetings may be held or attended
  • Methods of department communication
  • Unit/department Norms
    • Examples:
      • breaks, coverage, location
      • Dress code
  • Schedule of staff meetings, huddles and any other standing meetings
  • Unit/department materials
    • List of acronyms, jargon - organization and department
    • Mission, Vision, Values - organization and department
    • Organizational Chart - organization and department
